In a method for the driving of near-surface tunnels by the vault construction method, in which a trench 2 is excavated in the current construction section up to about half the height of the foot of the curvature, a cover section 3 of the tunnel tube is placed on the trench floor as a vaulted ceiling and the tunnel tube, after any filling 5 of the trench 2, is excavated underground within the protection of the ceiling and provided with linings 10, the ceiling is produced from prefabricated concrete sections 3, which are arranged in series and connected to the adjacent prefabricated sections 3 to form units which are also load-bearing in the longitudinal direction of the tunnel and can withstand loads immediately after the prefabricated sections 3 have been laid, and via which a substantial part of the load arising in the excavation area 6, 7, 8 can be transmitted to the finished tunnel lining 10 or the trench floor 2.
