- 27 -THIN-LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHY FLAME IONIZATION DETECTORFOR QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OFCHROMATOGRAPHICALLY-SEPARATED SUBSTANCESABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA flame ionization detector is used for carryingout a quantitative analysis of chromatographically-separated substances in thin-layer chromatography. Thedetector comprises a gas burner for forming a hydrogenflame. A thin-layer chromatographic element or arod-like element which carries the chromatographically-separated substances is passed through the hydrogenflame so that the separated substances are burned andionized. The detector further comprises an electrodewhich is disposed above the hydrogen flame and exposedto the ionized gas generated by the burning of theseparated substances. A voltage is applied between thegas burner and the electrode so that the former is givena positive polarity and the latter a negative polarity.An electric current which is caused by the exposure ofthe negative electrode to the ionized gas is detectedand amplified. A third electrode is disposed to surroundthe negative electrode so that an amount of each of theseparated substances can be proportioned to the amplifiedoutput value thereof.
