The device comprises: a laser transmitter (501,2) and two laser receivers (301, 302) which are each mounted on a displacement block which can move with two degrees of freedom; two receiver position sensors associated with each block and capable of measuring its position in two degrees of freedom (yi, zi) and of generating signals representing this position; a machine position sensor (303, 503,4) capable of measuring its position in a fifth degree of freedom, and of generating a signal representing this position; a computing device (70) sensitive to the said signals, capable of memorising the geometric characteristics of the surface over which the machine is guided, and designed to carry out the two-dimensional control of each receiver (301, 302) in order to keep the latter centred on the beam from the laser transmitter (501,2) and to generate, in real time, the commands sent to the actuators controlling the machine (10), as a function of the geometric characteristics. …IMAGE…
