microprocessor design technique in which the main functional modules of a microprocessor architecture are divided into a front end portion and rear end portion. The rear end portion, which provides the interface between the front end portion and the memory, is common to two or more microprocessor designs, and the front end portion, which includes all means of interpretation and instruction execution, is different for each of the different microprocessors.
