A cartridge (20) for a drinking water treatment apparatus which does not employ pressure has a gravity-flow housing (22) filled with a treatment material such as ion exchange resin and/or active carbon and, optionally, a bacteriostatic substance. The upper and lower end walls (24, 26) are inclined with respect to the horizontal and each contain a multiplicity of narrow slits (34, 36) which likewise run at an angle with respect to the horizontal. This achieves the result that air bubbles bubble along the slits to their higher ends, the main part of the slits remaining free for the passage of the water. IMAGE
