A compensation process is used to allow for the effects of atmospheric variations of images obtained using opto-electronic satellite sensors. The reflection efficiency obtained can vary by a factor of between 3 and 6 due to such factors as aerosol concentrations, altitude and sun. The compensation functions are established and a catalogue of values stored in memory. The original image is called from memory and the compensating values used. The image is filtered with an NxN matrix low pass arrangement and the resultant value is stored together with the reflection efficiency value. A final stage involves correction of the overexposure effect. ADVANTAGE - Fine resolution.
