The worm and wheel ball drive has a worm (1) in the form of a ring with a continuous helical groove formed in its periphery. The worm (1) is mounted in ball bearings (23) to enable it to rotate about its axis. The ring has internal teeth which mesh with the teeth of a pinion mounted on the driving shaft which runs parallel to the axis of the worm. The helical groove engages balls (4) which are retained in shallow recesses in the inside surface of the hollow driven shaft. The balls (4) roll along the helical groove of the worm and are supported on a cushion of lubricating oil which is fed into the supporting recess through a radial hole in the wall of the hollow driven shaft.
