An assay to distinguish Corynebacterium glutamicum (C. glut.), Brevibacterium flavum (B. fla.) and B. lactofermentum (B. Lac.) by the determn. of the optical density after growth (i) in suitable medium without C-source, (ii) with trehalose as a C-source, (iii) pref. in the medium BMCG (Liebl et al, Appl. Microbil. Biotechnology (1989), 32: 205-210) with (ii) or without a C-source, (iv) pref. in either of (i)-(iii), followed by growth on plates contg. ethionine in the medium and by the determn. of colony growth. Also claimed is a detection assay for the presence of 5'-DNA of the hom-gene (homoserine dehydrogenase from C. glut). The assays above can be used individually or in combination with another method. USE/ADVANTAGE - The mentioned bacteria are useful in industry for the prodn. of L-aminoacids. Provides the first method for a taxonomic distinction between the 3 species and any mutants developed can be distinguished
