A method of determining the state of encapsulated drive mechanisms with data discs and read-write heads involves detecting the running noise and/or the noise of the drive mechanism or head bearing as an analogue electrical signal. The analogue signal is converted into digital form and placed in an electronic memory. The measurement data pattern in the memory is compared with a reference data pattern. Noise frequencies are filtered out of the analgoue electrical signals and the essential frequencies are enhanced. USE/ADVANTAGE - Periodic checking e.g. during maintenance. Current state of mechanism can be determined, and any damage analysed, without opening the case.
