The archiving system with automated handling has carousels (12) with eight vertical columns, each of which has horizontal compartments that can receive a number of data storage cassettes (24). The carousels are arranged in a line and in front of them is a robot manipulator with a gripper (34) that can be swung on a compound arm mechanism (64,66,70) around a central pillar. The complete unit moves on a track (44). The gripper may also be moved vertically. The system is computer controlled and allows selected cassettes to be transferred to and from a number of read/write units for data exchange.
