Supported catalyst (I) for acetic acid prodn. by carbonylation of MeOH contains a phosphonic acid deriv. (II) as multifunctional adhesion promoter, bound to a support (III) and to a catalytically active sub-gp. VIII metal (IV). The novelty is that (II) is a deriv. of the given formula, forming chelates through dissimilar donors. X = (CH2)n, arylene or arylalkylene; Y = N(R2)3, an aryl gp. contg. N, -P(R2)3, -As(R2)3, -SR3 or -SH; R1 and R2 = OH, Br, -OR4 or -O-trialkylsilyl; R3 = 1-6C alkyl, 5-6C cycloalkyl, -C6H5 or -CH2C6H5, opt. substd. by halogen, MeO, EtO or 1-3C alkyl; R4 = 1-6C alkyl or 5-6C cycloalkyl; n = 1-5. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is suitable for liquid or gas phase carbonylation. Although (III) can be very variable, the prodn. of (I) with high activity and selectivity is simple and reproducible.
