Purifying raw drinking water loaded with organic matter - by exposure to long wave UV radiation

Raw drinking water loaded with organic substances, esp. nitrate contg. water loaded with plant protectants, is treated with UV light with wavelength above 230 nm. Pref. a filter which passes only UV light of wavelength abov 230 nm is used, e.g. an ''Infralux'' M 235 (RTM) filter. Or a lamp with emission at 230 nm, but little emission at below 230 nm, is used, esp. a Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4 dipping lamp, or a noble gas discharge lamp. The appts. comprises a UV lamp emitting at wavelength above 230 nm, or a UV filter passing radiation above 230 nm, and a flowthrough reactor with a UV-reflecting inner surface, and with inserts giving turbulent flow. The filter is of very pure quartz glass. ADVANTAGE - The process may be continuous. Nitrate is not converted to nitrite, and later oxidative treatment of the water is avoided
