In sensors for determining chemical substances or cpds. in liquids, e.g., blood, and gases, micro-electrode arrays (30) are formed as structures on silicon chips by planar technology or by micro-mechanical processes. Also claimed is a sensor for determining oxygen in aq. solns., e.g., blood, and/or for simultaneous determination of chemical and biochemical substances. The sensor comprises an electrode circuit which is a two or three d.c. or pulse operated electrode structure. ADVANTAGE - Any number of individual electrodes can be arranged in parallel-connected arrays to give high signal current and sensor sensitivity. The micro-electrodes can be arranged in any geometry and a third electrode for three electrode measurement can be easily integrated.
