IC engine-exhaust turbocharger - has swirl-passage inlets alongside each other in axial direction and concentric sets of compressor blades serving separate intakes
The turbine of the turbocharger is supplied with exhaust gas via two or more passages at separate points on the periphery. The cross-section of one passage is adjustable and at its maximum on full load. The output of the compressor driven by the turbine is adjusted to suit actual engine operating conditions. The turbine (2) is of the radial or semi-axial type, the two swirl-passages (9,10) being alongside each other in the axial direction as far as the inlet of the shorter one (9) to the rotor (11). The compressor (4) is also radial or semi-axial, its rotor (13) being double-bladed, with a first set of blades (17) enclosing a second one (18) concentrically. These serve concentric intake pipes (19,20), the cross-section of the inner one (20) being adjustable dependent on instantaneous engine operating conditions. USE/ADVANTAGE - Compact construction of turbocharger without noticeable flow losses.
