The extinguisher has a gear cylinder (32) surrounded by an extinguisher cylinder (16), and a spring (38) between the former (32) and a gear shift rod (74). A spring gear mechanism (102) is coupled to the shift rod (74) via a plunger (106). This cooperates with an extension (104) on the rod (74) to move the latter in the off direction. The spring (38) is supported on the rod (74) at one end. In the on direction, an actuator (42) moves in the longitudinal direction of the rod (74) to make the plunger (106) strike the other end of the spring (38). During both the on and off process, the gear cylinder (32) can be blocked by a releasable lock (62, 82). In both cases the spring (38) can first be stretched by the gear mechanism (102).
