A laser diode (1) is attached to a heat sink (9) with a temp. control circuit. The laser diode has an additional heating element (7,8) of low thermal mass in good thermal contact with the laser diode. The control time constant of the additional heating element, which is also temp. regulated by the temp. control circuit, is of the order of ms. The diode is mounted on a thin insulating plate (4) of high thermal conductivity stuck onto a second insulating plate (5) of high thermal conductivity mounted on the heat sink. The additional heating element (7,8) is applied to the adhesive (6) side of the second plate. ADVANTAGE - Frequency and power are both controllable with time constants of order of null.
