In a biological reactor, a gas stream passes through a pre-treatment device, a biomass bed and a post-treatment device, the pre- and post-treatment devices are designed to control the moisture and nutrient content of the biomass, the biomass is contained in a housing shell with two end walls, and the gas inlet and outlet are located in these end walls. The novel features are that: the pre-treatment device (12) is controllable (13) and is located in a chamber (7) in the housing (2), and the post-treatment device is also controllable, and a device (6) for determining the moisture-nutrient content of the biomass (5) is provided throughout its depth when viewed in the direction of gas flow (15), the biomass being in a fixed or gas-fluidised bed.
