MEASURING DEVICE FOR LENGTH OF SEAMLESS STEEL PIPE

PURPOSE: To measure the length of a seamless steel pipe highly accurately after rolling by detecting one pipe end of the steel pipe running on a carrier line, by photographing the other pipe end in two dimensions at the random detection timing, and whereby processing the image. ;CONSTITUTION: When the front end of a seamless steel pipe 11 running along a carrier line is detected by a detector 12, the detection signal is input into a calculation processor 14, and the steel pipe 11 is photographed at random by a two-dimensional CCD camera 3 at the timing. The photographed data is taken in an image processing part 14a, and image processing is carried out. The screen is first divided into sections in the diametral direction and the longitudinal direction of the steel pipe 11, for a predetermined number of picture elements or at the length of approximately 20mm. The total sum of the brightness of the picture element in each segment is determined, and the part where the total sum of the brightness exceeds a fixed value is recognized as a steel pipe. The farthest end of the section continued in the longitudinal direction is recognized as the pipe end. Calculation is carried out by a calculation part 14b based on the information on the position of the rear end and the information on the position of the known front end, so as to determined the length of the steel pipe 11. The pipe end, for which the total sum of brightness in the diametral direction is less than 90%, is considered out of shape.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO&Japio
