PURPOSE: To provide a catalyst containing copper, zinc oxide and aluminum oxide and used for hydrogenation. CONSTITUTION: This catalyst contains 40-130 pts.wt. ZnO and 2-50 pts.wt. Al2 O3 based on 100 pts.wt. CuO and optionally 0.5-8 pts.wt. oxide of Mn, Mo, V, Zr and/or an alkaline earth metal and 2-80 pts.wt. carrier, and has 80-175 m2 /g total BET surface area in the unreduced state and =15 nm pore radius rp in 75-95% of the total BET surface area. The catalyst is obtained by obtaining a coprecipitate from an aqueous solution containing salts of copper and other elements by using an alkaline precipitator, washing the coprecipitate, drying and being calcined, if necessary, and further being reduced.
