The invention relates to a metal suspension half-cell for a storage battery (accumulator), in which the metal suspension consisting of metal particles 31 and an electrolyte 32 is stabilized by the addition of additive particles comprising a ceramic material which promotes chain formation in the suspension. The presence of the said ceramic chain-forming material allows the metal suspension to be essentially stationary within the half- cell during operation. Various special geometries of the half-cell are illustrated. The composition of the suspension and the cell design afford increased cyclability of the cell. Also described are a method for operating a metal suspension half-cell according to the invention whilst it is being charged/discharged, and a metal suspension storage battery comprising a half-cell according to the invention.
