In a workpiece deep grinding process, the profile of the surface to be ground is determined with respect to a measurement basis before the grinding. The measurement values are stored in a computer. The grinding is effected according to the measurement values, allowing for a technological value that can be previously supplied to the computer, in particular a rate of metal removal, by means of a continuous-path control. A device for effecting the process has a measurement station (M) with measurement means (20) that is operatively linked with a computer (10) to control the grinding machine and has at least one measurement head (22). The workpiece carrier (9) conveys the workpiece (W) in and out of the measurement station (M).
