Piston ring with excellent running-in properties in combination with adequate wear resistance. The piston ring comprises a main ring body with an outer circumferential surface, with a wear-resistant layer of great hardness at least on the outer surface and with a layer of nickel applied to the wear-resistant layer of great hardness by plating. The nickel layer applied by plating has a thickness of 5 to 10 mu m.
