The method involves detecting and smoothing measurement values, deriving the vehicle's state from them, identifying the road conditions from the measurement values and vehicle state, predicting a prevailing friction coefficient from the road conditions and vehicle state and deriving the force connection potential from the frictional coefficient. The vehicle parameters smoothed by an exponential filter include the speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, yaw angle and steering wheel angle. The road condition is identified as dry, wet or icy. USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables continuous measurement of frictional connection potential of motor vehicle.
