Restraint system comprising an airbag and a gas generator having a cover (4) with an impact absorbing outer surface which can be pushed open against the force of springs (6, 7) as the airbag is inflated in response to an impact. On the subsequent deflation of the airbag the cover is returned to the closed position by the force of the springs. A flexible surface is then created over the opening of the airbag assembly housing.
