Sheets of variable material paper are extracted from a stack and are laid on the table (1) of a rotary printer such that some overlap occurs. The detection of overlap and single sheet sections needed for the following process is achieved with the aid of two arrays of optical sensors (4',4) providing outputs dependent upon the paper density. Because of the varying material characteristics, a definite rule on which to base the decision is inappropriate. A set of knowledge-based rules implemented in fuzzy logic form are used as the basis of a microprocessor-controller (6). ADVANTAGE - Identifies overlap of sheets made of greatly-varying range of materials of sheet.
