A shallow block (1) features a central longitudinal groove (2) in which the fibre (3) is laid for removal of a segment of its sleeve (5) by a single-edged blade (4) secured to the top of the block with its edge at right angles to the groove. Two such blocks may be juxtaposed in inverted relationship so that two segments are stripped from opposite sides of the fibre as it is drawn between the parallel blades. ADVANTAGE - Any length of sleeve can be removed easily and reproducibly without detriment to the optical properties of the fibre itself.
