A method of individualising and synchronising a lock control unit (2) for use a vehicle's central door-locking and security system incorporates a receiver for the acceptance/storage of signals transmitted from a battery-powered active key (1) encoded with a unique data-set containing fixed and variable elements. The lock control unit (2) also comprises a microprocessor, erasable memory, non-volatile memory, random number generator, pulse-counter and output-signal stage. The key (1) is similarly equipped with the exception of the counter and output stage but includes a battery source and pushbutton programming control. USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides max. security against unauthorised use or recognition code copying during vehicle assembly or subsequent servicing. Coded data and programming/synchronising signals are transferred from key to lock control unit memories by direct contactless transmission.
