The heat exchanger (11) comprises a number of axially aligned (19) tubes surrounded by a containing cylinder (12) with inlet (18) and outlet (17) connections at opposite ends of the cylinder (12) to permit the passage of a fluid medium through the tubes. A refrigerant gas, e.g. ammonia or a CFC enters at the inlet (13) and in circulating between the tubes gives up its heat to the fluid which they contain and is condensed for collection at the outlet (14). A refrigerant level (h) is maintained in order to prevent bubbles from being drawn into the pumped circulation supplying the connected refrigeration installation. USE/ADVANTAGE - Minimises volume and risk factor when using ammonia in accordance with statutory regulations or cost when using more expensive CFC alternative. Provides adequate depth of condensate to avoid vapour-locks.
