A portable memory is built into the key (R) for operating a vehicle. The shaft (1) of the key has a sensor pad (4) that is internally connected (5) with a solid-state memory chip (6) embedded within the main body (2). The sensor acts as a receiver and transmitter for the exchange of data with the memory and the vehicle system. The memory can be used to provide adjustment of vehicle elements, e.g. seat position, headlamps etc. to suit a specific driver. One sensor can be located in the steering wheel lock and one in the door lock. USE/ADVANTAGE - Simplifies process for accessing personal data for setting parameters. E.g. in office, to switch on lighting, copier, file-server and coffee machine.
