The device incorporates a shut-off valve (66,68), which is specially formed and controlled. When the oil return line (70,74) is open, the relative distance between running face (22) and piston (28) is changeable, with displacement of the running face in piston direction, and oil can flow only from the high pressure oil chamber (44) into the oil return line. The shut-off valve is electrically operated. Shut-off valve and back-pressure valve (60) are combined to form an integral unit. The shut-off valve consists of a reversing valve, having pref. two closing positions (62,64). USE/ADVANTAGE - Hydraulic valve gear for IC engine. Minimum load on oil pump combined with variation of valve timing periods.
