A proportional action electromagnet has a main body (1) that is cylindrical with an actuator pin of non magnetic material in the centre. This supports an armature element (6a) and moves on bearing surfaces. The armature moves in the gap (11) formed between projecting sections (14, 15) that provide magnetic flux surfaces. In comparison with a version in which the intermediate section (15) is absent, the magnetic force generated is greatly increased.
