Producing porous metal oxide-coated carrier for e.g. engine exhaust catalysts - by treating skinless steel with metal alkoxide and also a diol, cellosolve or polyether.
A porous catalyst carrier contg a metal coated with metal oxide grains of ave size 150nm or below and ave pore dia 5.5 nm or below is claimed, the carrier being obtd by subjecting the following components (B)-(D) to hydrolysis and polycondensation such that an also present stainless steel component (A) is coated with an oxygen-contg organometallic cpd, this coated prod then being heat treated; (B) a metal alkoxide opt together with a metal acetate salt, both being alcohol-soluble; (c) a diol, cellosolve or polyether soluble in alcohol and capable of co-ordinating with the cpd(s) in (B) above; and (D) an alcohol as solvent. USE/ADVANTAGE - A catalyst comprising a gp Ib and/or VIII metal deposited on the above porous carrier is claimed, such catalysts being useful eg in oxidn or redn reactions, esp in treating automobile exhaust gases. The carrier has uniformly sized fine pores allowing good dispersion of noble metals (eg Pt) to form multifunctional, high selectivity catalysts.
