The machine comprises a wheeled tractor (A) with two driven and one steerable wheels, a front-mounted shield (B) for pushing over the pseudo-trunks of the banana plants, and a rear tunnel chassis (2) connected to the tractor by height and angle regulators (15, 19) for an inertial chopper which it supports. The tunnel frame supports a vertical shaft (28) with a flywheel (35). A fixed bearing (39,40) for a coaxial intermediate shaft is connected at one end to the flywheel, and at the other to a circular plate with freely-pivoting cutting blades. The flywheel and cutter shafts are connected to the tractor by a telescopic transmission shaft (23) and a corner joint (25) with a speed booster. The tunnel frame rests on skis (9) connected to the frame by adjustable supports.
