Prepn. of yeast lysate rich in protein, useful for animal feed additives - by heating to rupture cells followed by UV radiation

The yeast lysate is prepd. by the following process: a) the yeasts undergo rupture of the cell walls by heating above 70 deg.C for at least 1 hr.; b) the resulting product undergoes physical sterilisation by exposure to UV radiation. Opt. the prod. is filtered between these two stages. The yeasts used may be those used in brewing, such as Saccharomyces carlsbergensis, or in bread making, such as S. cerevisiae. When filtration takes place between the two stages, a filter with a mesh size below 100 microns is used. The product contains around 30% dry matter, having 14-15% proteic material. This may be dried to a powder containing 42-44% proteic material. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in animal feed additives.
