An electrode (4) for electrochemical machining has at least one end face (6) supported on a component to be machined and at least one lateral face (8) carrying a coating (10) of amorphous carbon. Also claimed are the process of electrochemical machining using this electrode in the presence of an electrolyte and the process used to fabricate this electrode involving the application of the amorphous carbon coating by vapour phase chemical deposition. Pref. the electrode is of copper and the lateral face is covered with an undercoating of nickel or chromium beneath the amorphous carbon coating. USE/ADVANTAGE - The electrode is used for the electrochemical machining of components for the formation of hollows of complex form. The amorphous carbon coating of the lateral faces of the electrode provides a correct insulation and thus avoids the progressive widening of the hollows formed in the component.
