PRODUCTION OF THERMALLY SHOCK RESISTANT WASHCOATED SUBSTRATE

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject substrate by introducing a buffer soln. into the microcracks of a porous sintered body, bringing this body into contact with a washcoating slurry to form a gel at the boundary and preventing the intrusion of this slurry into these cracks. ;CONSTITUTION: The porous sintered body which has the microcracks and pores of a diameter of 5 μm and consists of a main phase selected from ceramics, glass ceramics, glass, cordierite or the like is prepd. The buffer soln. having a pH suitable for forming the gel by contact with the slurry used in the ensuing stage is introduced into the cracks and pores. Next, the washcoating slurry is brought into contact with the body described above to form the gel at the boundary to prevent the intrusion of the slurry into the cracks.
