PURPOSE:To improve operability by transmitting a prescribed character signal to a MODEM pool and setting a modulator/demodulator in the MODEM pool to a calling state when a digital switchboard originates and connect a data terminal equipment connected to an analog line through the MODEM pool from a data terminal equipment connected to a digital line. CONSTITUTION:When the digital switchboard 1 originates and connects a 2nd data terminal equipment 8 through the MODEM pool 15 from a 1st data terminal equipment 2, a character transmission means 300 transmits a preset character signal to the MODEM pool 15. Receiving the character signal transmitted from the character transmission means 300, a 2nd modulator/demodulator 152 in the MODEM pool 15 is set to a calling state, and data can be communicated between the 1st and 2nd data terminal equipments. Thus no special selection operation of the 1st data terminal equipment is needed, thereby enhancing operability.
