PURPOSE:To permit the embossing work of a sheet simultaneously with the discriminating indication of the sheet, by a method wherein a grade discriminating pattern, formed by the difference of the surface condition of an emboss roll and a backup roll, is embossed on the rear surface of the sheet material simultaneously with the transfer of the same. CONSTITUTION:A backup roll 4 is provided with a embedded rubber thread 8, whose material is different from the base of a silicon rubber layer 7 on the surface of a metal roll 6, into the base of the silicon rubber layer 7 as the discriminating indication while the surface of the thread 8 is appeared in the same plane as the silicon rubber layer 7 of the base. Embossing work is applied on the sheet material S by combining the backup roll 4 with the emboss roll 3 whereby a grade discriminating indication 9, shown by a chevron type continuous pattern, is transferred on the rear surface of the sheet material S based on the difference of surface conditions due to the materials of the silicon rubber layer 7 of the backup roll 4 and the thread 8, simultaneously, with the work on the surface of the sheet material.
