PURPOSE: To provide a reforming process for producing economically valuable coal suitable for transportation and storage by increasing heating value of a poor quality coal, e.g. peat, brown coal and lignite and at the same time reducing the danger of spontaneous ignition. ;CONSTITUTION: Dry coal produced by removing water from a poor quality coal is subjected to heat treatment at a reforming temperature of 200-400°C in the presence of a gas (a reducing gas) containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide. It is preferable that water content of the dry coal is ≤20wt.% and the reducing gas has 10-40vol.% of hydrogen, 5-30vol.% of carbon monoxide and 0.3-8 in H2/CO volume ratio.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
