Gabion or alternative concrete block formwork - uses wire mesh cage lined with suitable geo-textile to contain stone ballast or sandless than mesh size or as concrete formwork

A gabion for retaining structures, coastal defence, or erosion control, is formed with a suitable wire mesh (22) which may be galvanised or plastics coated. The cage so formed is lined with a geotextile capable of retaining fines, but which allows the through passage of water. The lined cage can be filled with stone or ballast (26) down to sand or cement size without escaping through the mesh. Used as a gabion, water can still drain through the structure. The principle can also be applied to rough concrete formwork for foundations etc.
