Use of parasympathicomimetic (parasympathomimetic) substances for the treatment of pain

The invention relates to parasympathicomimetic substances for the treatment of pain and compositions containing such substances and intended for the stated use. A reduction in pain and sometimes its disappearance is achieved by treating a sufferer by applying a composition (for example an aqueous solution) of a direct parasympathicomimetic substance to the surface of the epithelial tissue in the vicinity of the painful area. It is essential that the substance mentioned be applied in very small quantities to large areas of the epithelial tissue including that overlying the part of the body in which the pain lies.
