SILICON CARBIDE MONOFILAMENTS FOR IMPROVED COMPOSITE PROPERTIES AND METHOD

A high strength silicon carbide monofilament whichhas a core and a stoichiometric bulk layer of siliconcarbide deposited on the core having an exterior surfaceand a core bulk layer interface, the bulk layer havingan average grain size of less than 200 nanometers whichsize varies continuously across the cross section of thebulk layer, the variation comprising a first average grainsize at the interface which increases to a maximum averagegrain size intermediate the interface and the exteriorsurface and then decreases to the minimum at the exteriorsurface. In an alternate embodiment a surface layer isdeposited on the bulk layer of silicon carbide. A preferredmethod of making the silicon carbide monofilament is alsopresented.
