For the relief of tension in the comfortable operation of a belt retractor for safety-belt restraining systems in vehicles, there is provided an auxiliary spring (42) which can be selectively cut in in parallel with the retracting spring (30), but with the opposite effect. The auxiliary spring (42) is connected at its outer end to the outer circumference of a ratchet wheel (38) which can be selectively blocked by a ratchet, and is connected at its inner end, via a freewheel coupling (44), to a shaft (36) which is connected fixedly in terms of rotation to the belt reel (22). The freewheel coupling (44) allows a relative rotation between the end of the auxiliary spring (42) connected to it and the belt reel (22) solely in the unwinding direction of the latter.
