The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of ferric chloride using hydrochloric acid as the sole chlorine source.;According to the present invention, there is provided a method for oxychlorination of ferrous chloride with ferric chloride using hydrochloric acid and oxygen, followed by reuse of the ferric chloride portion to convert the ferrous chloride to ferrous chloride.
