The present invention relates to particulate chitosan core matrices for living cells encapsulated within a vehicle for implantation into an individual. The matrix provides a physical support for living cells and keeps living cells dispersed evenly throughout the core, thereby enabling maintenance, growth, proliferation and differentiation of living cells.
