The invention relates to a method of testing refractory materials having oxidic and/or siliceous bodies, as exist in the system Al2O3-SiO2. The test should make possible a prediction of the behaviour of the refractory materials under operating conditions. While the test methods hitherto are very complicated and numerous, the invention is intended to reduce the effort of tests. The invention achieves this by the determination of the oxygen isotope distribution, which is familiar from geochemistry, of the refractory material in two states, of which one state is the as-delivered state or the state of a sample which has been found to be good in operation, while the second state is that after a test firing or otherwise that of a further delivery of the same type from the same manufacturer. This leads to the determination of delta 18O values, the difference between which is significant for the quality and thus the behaviour of the refractory bricks under operational use conditions.
