A measurement method and an arrangement for characterising fast chemical reaction processes is characterised in that complete mass spectra are recorded with the aid of a tunable mass spectrometer which determines the mass occurrence rate of the reactants and reaction products, and a simultaneous or subsequent analysis of the actual gas composition of a reaction process is carried out, it being possible to represent, by a three-dimensional image, the mass occurrence rate of reactants and reaction products as a function of mass and at least one controlled-variable process parameter. The measurement method and the arrangement for characterising fast chemical reaction processes, according to the invention, allow investigation, for example, of the catalytic activity of platinum, it being possible in this case to record full mass spectra, that is to say that the method and the arrangement for carrying out the method, according to the invention, offer the possibility of covering a complete mass range for investigating reactions. Possibly unexpected reaction products are detected, as are the concentration ratios of products from different reaction paths. The selectivity can be determined using a single measurement.
