A deep acting primer with surface consolidating properties is composed of finely divided aqueous polymer dispersions. In order to improve the deep action and/or the surface consolidating properties, alcohol ethoxylates having 12 to 20 C atoms and a mean ethoxylating grade between 7 and 120 is contained in the molecular fraction composed of alcohol. In order to improve the removability of wall linings applied on a background treated with the primer, anti-adhesive additives may be added if necessary to the primer.
