The present invention relates to an optical device with liquid crystals exhibiting two stable configurations respectively generating two flexoelectric polarisations having components normal to the electrodes of opposite senses and electrical power supply means able to apply to the device electric field pulses perpendicular to the plates, oriented selectively in one sense or in the other, according to the main patent application, characterised in that the electrical power supply means are designed to apply successively to the device: at least one command pulse (Ca) able to induce a generally homeotropic homogeneous orientation of the liquid crystal, then a control pulse (Co) of lower amplitude than the command pulse, and of polarity chosen according to the final state required.
