PURPOSE: To reduce concentrations of NOx and CO in an exhaust gas without the use of any reducing catalyst by adjusting the ratio of an oxidizing agent in an combustion chamber so as to decrease the concentration of NOx in the exhaust gas to an allowable value and causing the activity of an oxidizing catalyst carried in a heat accumulating body to oxidize CO. CONSTITUTION: A through hole 1a, through which a burner nozzle 2 extends, is formed centrally in a heat accumulating body 1 which is secured to a wall portion of a combustion chamber to have a gas permeability. On the other hand, a cylindrical-shaped burner hood 3 is mounted on a side of the heat accumulating body 1 toward the combustion chamber or a high temperature side thereof. The heat of an exhaust gas discharged from the combustion chamber is accumulated in the heat accumulating body 1 to preheat an oxidizing agent supplied to the combustion chamber. In this case, the ratio of the oxidizing agent in the combustion chamber is adjusted so as to decreased the concentration of NOx in the exhaust gas to an allowable value. Then the heat accumulating body is made to carry an oxidizing catalyst to cause the activity of the oxidizing catalyst to oxidize CO in the exhaust gas. Therefore, the concentration of CO is reduced to an allowable value.
